The Interim Government has condemned the attack on a peaceful rally of the National Citizens' Party (NCP) in Gopalganj as "barbaric." They have vowed to bring those responsible for the incident to justice.
In a statement issued on Wednesday (July 16) afternoon, the Interim Government declared, "The manner in which the peaceful NCP rally in Gopalganj was attacked is utterly reprehensible and inexcusable. Those responsible for this barbarity must face justice. There is no place for violence on the soil of Bangladesh. Justice will surely prevail; this is our commitment."
The statement, sent by Faiz Ahmed, Senior Assistant Secretary to the Chief Adviser, further stated, "Such an attack on young citizens who came to peacefully celebrate the anniversary of the revolutionary movement from a year ago amounts to a deprivation of their fundamental rights. NCP members, law enforcement personnel, and journalists were brutally attacked today. Their vehicle convoy was vandalized, and they were physically assaulted."
The statement alleged, "Accountability will be ensured for this brutal attack, which is reportedly committed by the banned Awami League's student organization, Chhatra League, and its workers. The attackers will be swiftly identified and brought under severe punishment. Such violence against any citizen of Bangladesh will not be tolerated."
It also added, "We commend the immediate intervention of the army and police. At the same time, we extend our sincere congratulations to the brave students for their steadfastness and morale in continuing the rally peacefully despite all threats and intimidation."
The concluding part of the statement reiterated, "Those responsible for this barbarity must face justice. We are making it clear—there is no place for violence on the soil of Bangladesh. Justice will surely prevail—this is our commitment."
