The High Court has upheld the death sentence for 20 convicts and life imprisonment for 5 others in the much-discussed murder case of BUET student Abrar Fahad. This ruling confirms the verdict previously issued by Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1.
A High Court bench consisting of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahman delivered the verdict on Sunday (March 16).
Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of BUET, was brutally beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists on the night of October 7, 2019.
On December 8, 2021, Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1, led by Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman, sentenced 20 BUET students to death for their involvement in the murder. The court also handed down life imprisonment to five other students.
The case documents were sent to the High Court for review as a death reference on January 6, 2022. The High Court began hearing the case on November 28 last year before reaching today's verdict.
