The government has initiated a project to provide free flats to individuals severely injured during the July mass uprising, with 1,560 residential units to be constructed on government land in Mirpur 9, Dhaka. The National Housing Authority will implement this project at an estimated cost of BDT 1,344 crore.
According to the flat designs, each unit will span 1,250 square feet. Each flat will feature two bedrooms, a drawing room, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, and three bathrooms. Additionally, there will be a dedicated room specifically designed with all necessary facilities for injured individuals who have become disabled or visually impaired. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to supporting those affected by the July mass uprising, especially those who have lost their ability to work or become physically challenged.
Officials indicate that two separate projects for the martyrs and injured of the July uprising are expected to receive approval this month from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). Both projects are slated for completion by 2029.
According to government gazettes, 493 individuals have been classified as "critically injured" (Class A) and 908 as "severely injured" (Class B) in the July movement, totaling 1,401 severely injured individuals. Additionally, 834 people have been declared martyrs of the July mass uprising so far.
Sources confirm that the flats will be designed with the specific needs of injured individuals, particularly those with amputations, in mind. The buildings and living spaces will be constructed to facilitate easy access and comfortable living for them. A total of 15 buildings will be erected on land owned by the National Housing Authority within the Mirpur Housing Estate.
Syed Md. Nurul Basir, Chairman of the National Housing Authority, confirmed the development, stating that infrastructure construction is their priority. He added that the building construction is expected to take approximately four years. The final recipients of the flats will be determined jointly by the July Directorate, the National Housing Authority, and the Ministry of Public Works. He also mentioned that the severity of the injuries would be a key factor in allocating the flats.
