Bangladesh's Foreign Advisor, Md. Touhid Hossain, presented the nation's "July Uprising" as a model for youth-driven change at the UN yesterday, July 28, 2025.
Hossain highlighted how a student-led movement a year ago ousted an autocratic regime, leading to an interim government under Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.
He detailed reforms including repealing repressive laws, constitutional changes, electoral overhauls, and judicial independence.
The decisive steps taken by the interim government over the past year:
- Repealing laws that stifled dissent and eroded public trust.
- Embarking on constitutional reform to protect citizens' rights.
- Overhauling the electoral process to restore credibility and inclusiveness.
- Initiating institutional repair, including reviving the independence of courts and commissions.
- Creating genuine space for young people to lead.
Emphasizing that youth are now central to governance and innovation, Hossain asserted, "When young people are trusted, they can change our societies for the better." He urged global investment in youth leadership for a "more peaceful, just, and sustainable world."
