A Facebook post from the military base stated there were "casualties," but the exact number of injuries or fatalities has not been confirmed. The base is located in the state of Georgia, approximately 386 kilometers from Atlanta. Videos circulating on social media show military personnel evacuating the scene.
Local news outlets also reported that nearby schools were placed on precautionary lockdown.
Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko confirmed the situation, stating, "We are still assessing the situation and can confirm the presence of an active shooter." The FBI's Atlanta office is aware of the incident and stated that the situation at the scene is "active."
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X, "Our hearts are with and we are praying for the victims, their families, and the first responders who have stepped up to serve. We ask all Georgians to do the same." Congressman Buddy Carter, whose district includes the Fort Stewart base, added that he is "monitoring the situation. Please join me in praying for the victims, their families, and the brave members of law enforcement who are working to protect our community."
