RAB has arrested five people on charges of running 'fraud and anti-state campaign' by opening fake Facebook accounts in the name of national leaders, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members.
A team of RAB-2 arrested them from Moghbazar, Mohammadpur, Savar, Demra and Keraniganj in Dhaka on Wednesday night.
RAB headquarters assistant director Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan confirmed this information to media.
He said that the fraudsters were using fraudulent Facebook accounts to spread rumours and provocative propaganda.
Several pages have been opened on the popular social media platform – Facebook - in the name of Sheikh Hasina, none of which is her official page.
Earlier on January 11, Awami League, in a press release, warned that false information was being spread by opening Facebook pages in the name of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana and daughter Saima Hossain. No Facebook page was officially launched in their names, it said.
However, the release noted that Sajeeb Wazed Joy, grandson of Bangabandhu and Information and Technology Advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, runs a verified Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/sajeeb.a.wazed).
Moreover, Radwan Mujib Siddiq, son of Sheikh Rehana and trustee of Awami League's research organization ‘Center for Research and Information (CRI), supervises a Facebook ID (https://www.facebook.com/radwan.siddiq).
