A bridge collapsed in the Starship area of Chattogram’s Oxygen 2 No. Gate road following heavy overnight rainfall, resulting in the suspension of traffic on one side of the road. The incident occurred late Wednesday night when a strong water surge severely damaged the bridge.
Currently, vehicles are cautiously moving through the other side of the road, while the collapsed section has been cordoned off with red tape for safety.
The matter was confirmed on Thursday (7 August) by Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamsul Alam of Bayezid Police Station.
On-site observations revealed severe traffic congestion on both sides of the Oxygen 2 No. Gate road due to the slowed movement of vehicles. Train services on the University-bound shuttle and the Nazirhat route are also being disrupted.
According to the Patenga Meteorological Office, Chattogram recorded 81 millimeters of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 9:00 AM on Thursday. Forecast official Mahmudul Hasan warned that more heavy rain is likely in the next 24 hours.
The downpour has caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas of the city, severely inconveniencing office-goers and students. Due to the reduced number of vehicles on the road, many commuters were seen waiting at major intersections for transportation.
Commenting on the situation, SI Shamsul Alam said, “Traffic has been disrupted due to the road collapse. To prevent any accidents, a police patrol team and a unit from the Fire Service are on duty at the site.”
