Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has stated that the Proportional Representation (PR) system is not suitable for the context of Bangladesh.
He made this remark on Monday at a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad (Bangladesh United Professional Council) at the Engineers Institute in the capital.
"Some political parties in the country are currently advocating for the PR system," he said. "However, this system is not suitable for Bangladesh's political and cultural realities. Instead, it would create extremism and chaos within the state."
Rahman further added, "If there is no respect for the law, the state becomes autocratic and fascist. The only way to overcome this is through the collective power of the people and a neutral and participatory election."
He criticized those who, "by placing a gun on the shoulder of an interim government, want to maintain their dominance, attempt to exert influence, and resort to unethical tactics to serve their own interests—they are essentially involved in a conspiracy to disrupt the upcoming election."
The BNP acting chairman appealed, "I urge those who are taking advantage of the situation and resorting to unethical tactics not to betray the blood of the martyrs."
Expressing his frustration, he said, "Even after a year, the list of martyrs has not yet been finalized. This will be depicted as a national failure in future history. A certain group is actively trying to monopolize the uprising. If the same effort had been put into preparing the martyrs' list, it could have been finalized by now."
