He made this statement in a message released on Sunday (July 27) marking 'World Hepatitis Day'.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus expressed his pleasure that 'World Hepatitis Day' is being observed in Bangladesh, similar to other countries worldwide. He believes this year's theme, 'Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down,' is significant in achieving the goal of eliminating hepatitis.

He further noted that the prevalence of liver diseases in Bangladesh is becoming increasingly severe due to a lack of awareness about liver ailments, delayed treatment, and various existing superstitions.

According to reports from various national and international organizations, approximately 4.4% of Bangladesh's population is infected with Hepatitis B virus, and 0.6% with Hepatitis C virus.

Every year, many people in the country lose their lives to complex diseases like hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver failure.

He highlighted that with awareness and timely, accurate treatment, it is possible to prevent these diseases and live a healthy, long life.

The Chief Adviser mentioned that the government has undertaken initiatives to improve the quality and capacity of hospitals across the country and strengthen programs providing free health, family welfare, and nutrition services to marginalized communities.

He added that medical services have been launched at the district and upazila levels through mobile phones and online platforms.

The government has already adopted various programs to achieve the global goal of eliminating hepatitis by 2030.

However, he stressed that there is no alternative to a combined effort from everyone to achieve this goal.

To prevent hepatitis, a "silent killer," Dr. Yunus urged all government and non-government institutions and organizations, media, parents, and conscious civil society to come forward.

The Chief Adviser wished all programs organized for 'World Hepatitis Day-2025' overall success.
