An eviction drive is currently being carried out at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, led by an executive magistrate from RAJUK and supported by officers from Shahbagh Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The operation began around 11:30 am on Thursday (May 15), targeting illegal structures within the park. According to Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur, all unauthorised establishments inside the park are being demolished. He stated that there were reports of drug dealing and consumption taking place in these illegal setups, prompting the authorities to take immediate action.
This drive comes just days after a tragic incident at the park. On the night of Tuesday, May 13, Shahriar Alam Samya, the Literary and Publication Secretary of the Chhatra Dal unit at Dhaka University's Sir AF Rahman Hall, was fatally stabbed near the open stage (Muktamanch) inside Suhrawardy Udyan. He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
Samya was a Master's student in the Department of Education and Research at Dhaka University and hailed from Ullapara in Sirajganj.
