Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Nannu, a primary suspect in the murder of scrap merchant Sohagh, from Narayanganj's Bandar area. Sohagh was brutally killed with stones in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital (Mitford) in Dhaka. Nannu was apprehended around 1 AM on Sunday night.
Lieutenant Colonel H.M. Sajjad Hossain, Commanding Officer of RAB-11, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, July 15.
Nannu is reportedly one of the four individuals seen in a viral video using bricks and concrete blocks to assault Sohagh, ensuring his death. With Nannu's arrest, a total of eight people have now been apprehended in connection with the murder.
Regarding the arrest, Lt. Col. Sajjad Hossain stated, "RAB-10 conducted the operation last night and arrested him. We provided assistance. Details on the matter will be provided by RAB-10."
Earlier on Sunday morning, two individuals named Sajib and Rajib were arrested from Dhaka and Netrokona. They have been taken into police custody on a five-day remand for questioning.
The gruesome murder occurred publicly on a busy road in front of the hospital last Wednesday. Before his death, Sohagh was called out, beaten, and his head and various body parts were crushed with bricks and stones. At one point, he was stripped naked, and some individuals were seen jumping on his body.
Police and family sources of the deceased revealed that Sohagh was called by some youths from Old Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon, based on a prior acquaintance. He was killed in the evening. Sohagh was involved in the scrap business, dealing in old copper wires and aluminum sheets.
According to family sources, Sohagh was once involved in Juba Dal politics. His ancestral home is in Barguna Sadar. He has a 14-year-old daughter, Sohana, who is in sixth grade, and an 11-year-old son, Sohan, who is in fourth grade.
The murder case of businessman Lal Chand alias Sohagh names 19 individuals. Locals initially suspect extortion as the motive behind the killing.
