Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, the Finance Advisor, stated in his budget speech that electricity generated from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to be supplied to the national grid by December of this year. He emphasized that the construction of the 2,400-megawatt nuclear power plant at Rooppur is progressing rapidly.

The Finance Advisor made these remarks on Monday (June 2) during his budget address for the 2025-26 fiscal year, broadcast on Bangladesh Television.

He also mentioned that a significant agreement was signed with Nepal on October 3, 2024, under the framework of sub-regional cooperation. This agreement will enable Bangladesh to import 40 megawatts of hydropower at an affordable price to meet summer electricity demand.

Reforms in Power Sector & Modernization of Distribution
To ensure transparency and accountability in the power sector, the advisor noted that the 'Electricity and Energy Fast Supply Increase (Special Provisions) Act, 2010' has been repealed. He added that a national committee has been formed to review agreements already executed under this act and to formulate recommendations.

Concurrently, a separate committee has been established to review the tariff structures of these agreements, renegotiate them, and provide further recommendations.

Furthermore, as part of modernizing the power distribution system, work is underway to underground distribution lines and substations in metropolitan areas. The advisor stated that this measure will make the electricity distribution system more stable and efficient.
